adoption in Australia

How would my partner and I go about adoption ? Its something I've wanted to do since I was a child and I feel we are in a good place to do so. Any advice is appreciated as I have no idea where to start. Thank you!

You need to contact your local child protection service. In SA that's FamiliesSA recently renamed The department of child protection.

There are very strict guidelines on who and how you can adopt and far more applicants than children available. It's not like the US system at all which many of us see on TV.

First off, do some research as it talks you through the process. Australia is pretty strict and it can take around 6 months - 2 years for someone to consider your case.

If you have been through fertility services in the last 12 months, they automatically dismiss you. If you are X amount overweight (combined weight) they will dismiss you until you have lost a certain amount of weight, etc etc. It is quite strict. You can choose whether you want to consider infants only in Australia (longer process) or from overseas, or if you are willing to take on toddlers or older children etc.

Good luck :)

Adopting in Australia is so tricky! I'd recommend starting off with fostering first.
