I need a job. How do you get your foot in the door at somewhere like Coles? A month ago I took my resume in only to be told by the girl of the service desk that all applications are done online. Came home, applied online but have heard nothing. With Christmas just around the corner and the fact that I live in a beach/holiday area I thought they would be screaming for people. Or are they only interested in students?

When I worked in woollies, we didn't really hire anyone for Xmas, we preferred to give casuals that were already employed with us more hours.
Usually they have a lot of school kids casually working weekends and after school so they tend to just give them more shifts once they are on school holidays. Sorry you are having trouble. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Apply for many many jobs
Now that your on-line application is in, go back to that branch and several others and ask again for work. When they say it's all done on-line, say yes I am registered and put forward your case, make sure you use your name a couple of times and they have heard. Get to know the store/shift managers in your local outlet. My boys all got jobs with Woolies this way - when they want people they go onto their website and search applicants from their area and if they know your name they will scan down the lists and tick you for shortlisting. Once you get an interview that's when you really get to win the job. It's the same with all the big companies - unless you are registered they can't even look at you. Good luck.
It would also depend on your availability. They would be looking for someone who is able to work weekends and outside of school hours. I work in a supermarket and I know we struggle to get people to work weekends and nights. And then the casuals we already have get first call on extra hours.
Put your application number from applying online on top of your resume and drop it off in store. That's the best way to do it.
Get your online application number and write it on top of your resume and drop it off in store.
