Hi Ladies,
Hoping you can help me.
My son is due to turn 5 in July and commence Prep next year.
He's generally a really great kid, however yesterday he went to our next door neighbours 5th birthday party and he became so overwhelmed when we arrived as the only person he knew was the birthday boy and ofcourse he was playing with his kinder mates. He worked himself up to quite a state, he didn't join in any activities as he didn't know anyone.
My question is, do I have anything to be concerned about?
I know that if he's friends were there he would've been off with them playing happily.
My concern is, will he cope at primary school
This has kind of worried me.
Help!
Thank-you x

I think he will be okay. When my son was at daycare twice a week he use to cry on every drop off without fail , but after picking him up the teacher would say he had a great day., so once was time to start prep i didn't know how he would cope with not knowing anyone and as he use to cry so much at daycare I thought for sure come prep he would be a mess. Turns out tho the first day at prep he didn't cry once he loved the atmosphere and he got more confident especially after meeting a couple of friends. I'm sure your boy will be just fine, kids have a way of surprising you.
Goodluck
If all else fails, managed attendance will help ease him into it.
I'm feeling pretty anxious for my daughter to start prep next year as well, she becomes unsure of things when she doesn't know anyone. I need to move house in the next month or 2 so im waiting til then to decide what school (which ever is the closest due to zoning rules I guess) and I plan to ask social groups eg facebook local mum page, even the kindy she attends, if any parents plan to send their child to said school and would like to have regular play dates etc so she can develop a friendship/s over the next 6 months leading up to prep :) although I think that would be for my peace of mind, as on one hand i'm sure she'll be fine, like the first day of kindy she was great! lol
