Hey sisterhood! I'm desperate for some answers!!
My 7 year old son has had an ongoing cough for about a year now. I've taken him to the GP, who put it down to asthma induced by a common cold, and prescribed Ventolin, telling us to use it as necessary. It didn't help at all.
Just recently his father took him back to the same doctor, who has now put him on Respikast 5, another asthma medication but in tablet form.
I am not convinced that my son has asthma as he doesn't have any other symptoms (but I'm no expert). For the record, no X-rays have been done at any stage.
My son also had a paediatric appointment not long ago and I mentioned it at that appointment and I got fobbed off.
This constant cough is destroying my son's life. It breaks my heart seeing him upset because he's so tired of it! Does anyone have any suggestions or any advice on who to see about it?

Go get further opinions. Have they tried steroids if it is asthma?
Get a second opinion. If its asthma medication either ventolin or steroids would relieve it even for a short time.
I would be seeing a different doctor. My son had a persistent cough and my doctor took it very serious.
Definitely get a second opinion. I don't want to worry you, and certainly this is not a medical forum, but in my limited experience persistent coughs may mean heart trouble or lung trouble.
My son had a persistent morning cough for a long time and when the air gets slightly cool. He also had croup often and only grew out of it this year..(he is nearly 8).
We went to the doctor and the doctor also said childhood asthma and that he may or may not grow out of it. I my self work in pharmacy and thought it could be allergy related. We did a 2 week course of antihistamines and ventolin and it went away. We also had a peds appointment and she said I was on the right track and that he had allergy induced asthma. He has since then not have had a reoccurrence. If allergies run in the family then it could be a possibility. No harm in trying a non drowsy antihistamine. But also mention it to the doctor next time you go. Good luck!
I reckon an ENT specialist is who you need to see.
