Induction of labor

Induction of labor

Hi,
I will be getting induced due to medical reason at 39.5 weeks, (this coming Sunday) and wanting to know more info. The midwife who booked me in was very rude and kept talking about me like I wasn't there complaining to the maternity ward that "they simple can't wait till 41 weeks any more, there are always some sort of excuse ...'. So I didn't feel comfortable asking her anything. And I doubt the doctor would of suggested induction if it wasn't need, I was also induced with my 4 year old when I was 6 weeks pregnant for pre E and she was born 7 pounds 9.

Well for starters the doctor said she has done a she couldn't sweep to help things along hopefully but when I asked her if I was dilated she said she couldn't tell as it just felt like I've had a vaginal delivery previously (which I have, this is my second bubs) so I'm confused I've heard that you need to be dilated somewhat for the sweep?

Other question they said I should call the maternity ward on Sunday 6:30am and they instruct me when a bed is available then I will be admitted , the will be using Prostin Gel How does it work, how long can it take, am I on bed rest or do I need to be mobile?
I know it's hard to plan these things but I trying to be as organized as possible I've sorted out my daughter care for the week (hopefully it does not drag that long), and I'm thinking it's best if my fiance still works up in till labor starts so he is not wasting his time off, he only work 10 min drive from the hospital so even with packing up, advising his boss, traffic and parking he'll be at the hospital within 30 mins.

So if anyone has more information on this process , what I should expect that would be highly appreciated.
Again this is my second pregnancy, I'll be 39+5 , supposedly not dilated (for now) and I am also expecting a big boy....

Thanks everyone!!

Speaking from my only experience, remember everyone is completely different. I was induced at 37+3. They did a stretch and sweep (I was not dilated at all so assuming you don't need to be for a s&s to be done). I was sent home and told to come back if labour started. It didn't, so the following day they inserted the first lot of gel and I was kept in hospital from that point. Contractions started, they were going to give me a second dose of gel 6 hours later, but as contractions were going along smoothly they decided not to, and instead gave me morphine injections in my legs so I could get some rest over night. By morning (12 hours after gel was inserted) I hadn't progressed at all, so they broke my waters and inserted the induction drip. Labour started immediately. Now everyone is different, but for me neither the stretch and sweep nor the gel worked. Go in with an open mind that it could take 4 hours, or it could take 48 hours. It really depends on how your cervix is and how ready the baby is. It sounds like you have everything sorted, you could always call your gp, or make an appointment with a different midwife and discuss it with her. Good luck, I wish you all the best and send you lots of healthy vibes xx

I was I diced wih both my babies at 38 weeks. My first I had 3 lots if gel each 6 hrs apart and that was enough to start my contractions and labor. He was born after 8hrs. The next was 20 months later I had a stretch and sweep done 5 days before then had 1 lot of gel and he was born 3 hrs later. Everyone is different, best of luck.

If your dilated they will insert the gel under the membranes or as far into the cervix as they are able to you will then go and. Rest for about 6 hours, at this point they will check u and see if you have dilated if you have they will put u n birthing suit and begin induction, if they are able to they will brake ur water and hook u up to a drip to start contractions, it's best you have a good meal that morning as the process can be quite drawn out and after that six hours they don't like u to eat very much in case a c section is neededdont be scared to ask for pain relief ASAP as induced labour can be quiet intense quite quickly. Best of luck an baby dust xxoo

I was induced for my 2nd child. Once you get to the hospital they check your vitals then apply the gel. Once they do this they expect you to stay until the baby is born (I thought I would be able to go home). Be prepared take a book, ipad or something to keep you busy. I was able to go for little walks just not to far from the hospital in Cairns so just across from the esplanade. At the time I spoke to the MW and she advised everyone is different, some go into labor pretty much straight away, some it takes a few applications and for some it does not work at all they have a c-section. From memory they apply the gel every 6-8hours. I had two applications and had my baby that evening a very short labor, the best of the 3 I have had. No need for bed rest before hand, keep active. Wishing you the very best.
