3 year old major meltdowns

I am seriously at my wits end and wondering if I'm just s crap mum :(
Our 3 year old son is the most caring, smart funny little guy but he can be so head strong and full on at times. He's always been a good tantrum thrower but in the last maybe 7 months he's been having some absolute meltdowns. To the point where he just screams and throws himself around, nothing can console him and he just goes completely off, hitting and kicking if you get close. I have recently had another baby, and even though this started while I was pregnant I don't think it's jealously or anything like that as he adores his new brother and we make sure we involve both he and his older sister in things to do with the baby. These meltdowns have also extended to daycare drop offs. He attends one day a week and he used to love it. But we have actually had to stop sending him because it's been happening every drop off for months and its so embarrassing and stressful! We did actually wonder if he's learning these behaviours from the daycare or if somethings going on there because this all started around the time he was moved up to the next room suddenly and now he begs me to not send him :(
So sorry for the long post but I guess I'm just after advice on what to do or if anyone's been in the same position with their little boys behaviour. Do I ignore it? Should I seek professional help?

Something my child's psychologist said to me is 'learnt behaviour (from other kids) lasts a matter of weeks not months'. If this was a learnt behaviour it would have passed.
I'd definitely seek professional help, if they say it's normal so be it, but not seeking help and it continuing like this or getting worse is a mistake.

My sons tantrums were worse at 3 and 4 then they were at 2. Now at 5 they have stopped.
