Re: worried about child's speech

I was the one who wrote about being worried about my friends child's speech.
Thank you for all of your answers, they were extremely mixed but I decided to go with telling her.
I thought about it and I would prefer the child not go to school with bad speech as she could fall behind her peers. I also read several comments about how we shouldn't just expect other people to say something when we are concerned and I think that is so true. I even read a few comments about how their own child needed speech therapy and no one told them, not even teachers, because they figured someone else had until it was far too late.
I suggested the friend speak to a professional and she agreed. She didn't seem offended at all.
Thank you again.

Hi. I was concerned about my child's speech and I was recommended speech therapy. However there was a 6mth waiting list. Something didnt sit right with me and I had his hearing checked first. Again a 6mth waiting list thru public system. So found a private child audiologist and turns out he had blockage of 50% in both ears from probably a virus. When it was a time to learn to talk we sounded as thought we were under water to him. A dr would not have been able to see this. Audiologist said she sees lots of children around 4yrs of age who have had months of speech therapy but not progressing and can end up being a simple thing as grommets or antibiotics (in our case) So maybe suggest a hearing test first? Not sure if this has been suggested. She also said that because there are more nasty viruses out there then more kids about the age of 4 are presenting with speech difficulties. Good luck to your friend.
