son with speech trouble.

Hey. My son has been diagnosed with dysbraxia. and I'm finding it so hard to get info on it. He is 5 years old and I've had to hold him back from school. It's not dyslexia. It's a speech thing. Has anyone else had thia trouble with their child before. Any help would be great. Thanks. No negative comments please.

Dyspraxia is also referred to as apraxia of speech. It's a motor planning disorder. My son has it. There are extremes of the condition. Some kids are totally non verbal and others have a very mild version.

Try googling Apraxia of speech and if you don't have a private speech therapist find one. Depending on the severity your son may need a form of augmentative communication to communicate like signing or PECs or iPod or a combo of speech and AAC.

I hope that helped

My daught has aprexia aswell. Do some research, find a really good speech therapist and start working. Earlier the intervention the better the outcome. My daughter was diagnosed at 3yrs old had 3yrs of speech therapy and went to a specialised school for kindy, pp and yr 1. Therapist give you different ideas and games to work on at home to help your child. But they need preactice which means alot of homework for you. If you live in WA look up the Language Development Centre. Wais the only state that has specialized speech schools that are public their hard to get into but really well worth it if you can get in. Feel free to pm me on fb if you would like to ask any questions. Even tho it looks.like the end is really far away atm their is light at the end of the tunnel my daughter is noe 8yrs old in main stream school getting above average marks.

It honestly seems like it is never going to end. He is 5. Had severe speech problems and they have only now told me what it is . it is so hard for me to see him struggle and get frustrated. Do you know what ot is caused from. I feel like I have failed as a mother to him. Thanks so much x

First responder here, it's usually just one of those things that just happens.
You did nothing wrong to cause this. It's luck of the draw so to speak. There is nothing you could have done to prevent it.

I struggled aswell and felt i did something wrong. They cant tell me why she had speech issues just that it was something in her brain and they dont know why it happens. Its such a varied issue that their isnt alot of specific research on any particular type. My daughter has been apart of alot of research papers i figure if it could give them an answer on how to help kids in the future why not. Pls feel free to pm me on fb if you would like more info of just to talk.
