Hi Mummies, to cut a long story short ever since my kids moved back into the public school system three years ago headlice has been a permanent continuing battle in our house. (They never had them in the catholic system in the small town we lived in due to the strict hair up policies, but since moving back to the coast its a nightmare). I wash their hair in lice solution, I've tried every brand more than once, moove seems the most effective, i meticulously comb out every strand and even use tweezers to pull out any missed eggs, wash every piece of bedding, pillows etc, sterilize brushes wash all towels spray lounges. Every week. Everything advised from everywhere even spraying daily eucalyptus oil and water or commercial head lice defense sprays but no matter what i do they are back two days later. Im fighting a losing and epensive battle. With four kids its costing me around $30-$50 each week in product to do us all. I know alot is from school they will be completely lice free on Monday morning then by Wednesday there are adult ones jumping around in there. They've even come home monday afternoon with them. Is there anything i can do? i feel like i'm going insane and bankrupt from this. The school cant help other than sending home notes saying there is lice found in the classroom and please check your kids but alot of parents refuse to do anything about it.
The losing battle of headlice, there must be a better way?

Oh gross that must be so annoying!!! I can't believe parents can be so slack.
Have you tried putting conditioner in the hair and not rinsing it out? It will make the hair look wet but I'd rather that than headlice continuously
Eurgh that's so hard! We had a couple of week battle with head lice with my daughter due to her best friends mum not treating her daughter for headlice. I couldn't imagine what you're going through!
I heard that coconut oil in the hair also helps stop head lice from being able to attach to the hair, might be a cheaper solution? Same as previous poster, the hair will look a bit icky though
Apparently kitten flea drops work... there was a post about this a couple of months ago. I haven't tried it myself but there were loads of comments suggesting it.
I use neutralice every week for 2-3 weeks and make sure my daughter's hair is up every day.
Get straight tea tree oil and put a ml in your shampoo and anothet ml in your conditioner. I had simular issue and since doing this and having my daughter hair platted or braided every day at school never had an issue since.
A cheaper way instead of lice shampoo is to cover the hair in conditioner and comb it out. For school, braid or plait in a bun and spray with hair spray
Have you tried tea tree shampoo? My son and I got them not long back and the second time I brought this tea tree shampoo that was about $4 and ever since using it we have not had them again. It's in the shampoo section near the nit treatments if the supermarkets.
Such a nightmare but please stop treating them with chemicals every week, skin is porous and those chemicals are entering your kids bodies - not good - and it's not working anyway! As other have said put coconut oil or a think natural conditioner on their hair every night and comb the nits/eggs out. Put long hair up and spray with tea tree or other natural nit repellent (spray their hats too). Don't bother hot washing anything it doesn't make a difference, just be vigilant with combing and try to get the school community on board (post a msg on the FB page or in the newsletter etc) good luck ?
Best product to use is hair condition. It is slippery so the eggs can't hold. It's much cheaper too. I found the metal comb the best to use too. It's a myth that you need to wash bedding too. The lice and eggs need body warmth so won't survive without. I had the same issue of returning lice when my child was in prep. There was one girl that had lice all the time and she just kept sharing them around.
