Gestational Diabetes

My sister is nearly 29 weeks pregnant & just found out she has gestational diabetes, I've just read some info online & it said can result in a stillborn. I know probably worst case scenario but freaked me out a bit. She has an appt this week with a dietician was just wanting to hear other woman's stories who have had this. Thank you

I've had gestational diabetes and I'm also a dietitian! A dietitian will be able to give very clear information about carbohydrate counting and BGLs to aim for. Also she should see a Diabetes Educator. The guidelines have recently become stricter around diagnostics and levels to aim for. Usually 2 or more high levels a week she should report to her health professional. Best wishes to her!

I had GD with second baby. Don't worry- she will be closely monitored. It is important to stick closely to diet as outlined by dietitian and diabetes educator (it was actually a really good education re carbs that everyone would benefit from!) She may need insulin, which I did in the end- that was OK too. I was wanting a natural birth but need an elective caesar in the end as the doctors said they didn't want me to go full term. The risk is that the baby will be really big and shoulders can get stuck so she may not be able to go full term. If she follows treatment guidelines other complications can be minimized. The baby and I did really well, and had fine levels straight after birth. He is now a lovely 2 year old. Not all countries screen- Australia does, and we have great outcomes from treatments offered. Hope it all goes well.
